On Friday, we discussed our "Application to a City" project. This project, which can be presented in poster form OR on PowerPoint, requires students to analyze each of the 6 Essential Elements of Geography with a specific city in mind. The city must be a major city OUTSIDE of the United States. Students must select a city by Monday August 15th. The project is due on Thursday August 18th. Here is a run-down of the requirements:
I have cautioned students about using Wikipedia as their main resource online. Be mindful that it isn't always accurate or reliable information. Here are some links you may find useful: National Geographic-Kids Culture Crossing PBS Learning CIA World Factbook National Geographic Map-Maker IMPORTANT: We will be working on this project some in class this week. Students choosing to do a PowerPoint and/or type their written summary will need to have a flash-drive or an email account they can use to access their project from the classroom.

This week has been focused on reviewing some very important concepts from 4th and 5th grade. Math is sequential and requires mastery at each level. I have discovered this week that many of our students have not mastered their multiplication facts. There are countless phone apps and online games/resources available to help students with their multiplication facts. Please encourage your child to review multiplication facts this week and next, even if they get them correct, they need to PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE. Fluency is key :)
Both classes have homework tonight reviewing the Order of Operations. Students must know they can't always solve math expressions from left to right. Ask them about PEMDAS, they should be able to tell you what operations need to be done first. Below is tonight's homework assignment. Show all work ( re-write problem after each step). Should be completed WITHOUT the use of calculator. 3rd period: Complete all of pg 18 from the red workbook 4th period: Complete pages 18 & 19 from the red workbook. I have included an instructional game below to help students practice following PEMDAS. It includes all operations and some basic exponents. campus.mangahigh.com/en-us/px/6/0/0 Welcome! I am so excited for the 2016-2017 school year to get underway! My name is Mrs. Gibbs, and this is my first day in 6th grade as well! This is my 9th year teaching, and my 5th year as a Barbourville Tiger! Prior to this year, I have been the 7th & 8th grade math teacher. A little about me: my husband and I have 2 sons. They are rowdy, loud, and incredibly smart! You can usually find us on a lake, at a ball field, hiking, or hanging out with our 2 dogs, AJ & Charlie. I received my Bachelor’s degree in Education from Union College. I also received a Master’s degree in School Counseling from the University of the Cumberlands. This blog will be used as a way to communicate and document what is happening in our classroom and within our school. Some posts may be basic assignment reminders, some may provide a link to a worksheet or online site to visit, and some will be simply to show off the hard work our students are putting in! Let's get this year started! |
