Both of today's NTI assignments are from our current Geometry unit of study. Students need a basic calculator. The first assignment is a review of Nets and Surface Area of rectangular prisms. Remember, surface area is the sum of each of the faces and bases of a solid. Read the directions on the assignment carefully! The second assignment is a review of Volume of rectangular prisms. The front page is a review of what volume means and how to find volume. The back has a few practice problems. Again, read the directions carefully! We will go over both assignments this week. As I always say, this is NOT busy work. This is important work :)

Friday Feb 24th and Monday Feb 27th are both NTI days. It is VERY important that students commit to working hard on their packets. KPREP is right around the corner and we have lots of content to cover! Our students worked super hard on their packets for the first 2 NTI days, and I think it will surely show! Below are two separate assignments for math, as well as the one assignment for world geography. PRINT OUT THE 3 ASSIGNMENTS that say NTI! The 4 files named atlas 89-91 are charts/maps for the geography work, but students can just look at those. No need to print out them out! I will be glad to email you a copy of the work if you have trouble accessing it from here. If you aren't able to print it off, email me and I will meet you with a paper copy! I will be available during regular school hours both days if you need help! My email is on the school website!
Students were sent home with two packets for Mrs. Gibbs. One of them is a Reading Essentials packet for World Geography, focusing on lesson 6-3 in our Latin America unit of study. The other packet is Solving Percent Problems. If you did not receive a packet, or have lost it, I will attach them below or have extra copies in the office at school. I will be available all day with a lunch break from 12-1 if there are any questions.
In the event that we are out of school and an NTI Day is used, this blog will be the "go-to" for 6th grade Math & Geography assignments and information. I will also used REMIND to send out texts with any important information or helpful tips. You can also email me at [email protected] if you have any questions.
On Monday and Tuesday of this week, 6th grade students at BMS reflected on primary sources relating to the 9/11 attacks on our nation. Students created a timeline of events, including the exact times each tower fell or plane crashed. Students then watched videos with first-hand interviews from survivors and the speech of President George W. Bush on the evening of 9/11. Students discussed how listening to the survivors recollections and watching the official speech of President Bush differed from reading about 9/11 in an article or textbook. Students reflected on the long-term effects that 9/11 had on our nation as a whole. They were also asked to list ways they could honor the lives lost or sacrificed. Many students were very creative in listing ways they could serve others this week. Finally, we were led by a student from each class in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance in honor of lives lost and those currently serving to keep our nation safe. Below is the PowerPoint presentation we used during the two-day lesson on 9/11. There are 4 videos linked without the presentation. Students may want to re-watch these videos or share them with someone who was alive during 9/11 and discuss their reactions and emotions.
We have been working on standard 6.NS.3, which requires students to be able to read, write, compare, and compute decimals. Our UNIT ASSESSMENT will be Tuesday September 13th. Students have taken several quizzes they can use to study, as well as notes from their workbook. A major weakness is being able to say a number with decimals in correct place value.
For example: 17.987 would be read aloud or written in word form as "seventeen AND nine hundred eighty-seven thousandths". Also, students need to be able to round decimals to a given place value. If the above number ( 17.987) were to be rounded to the nearest hundredths place, it would become 17.99. I have linked some online resources below for computation practice. Remember, the focus is to become fluent when working with decimals ( we will work with fractions in a later unit of study). This project, which can be presented in poster form OR on PowerPoint, requires students to analyze each of the 6 Essential Elements of Geography with a specific city in mind. The city must be a major city OUTSIDE of the United States. Students must select a city by Monday August 15th. The project is due on Thursday August 18th. Here is a run-down of the requirements:
I have cautioned students about using Wikipedia as their main resource online. Be mindful that it isn't always accurate or reliable information. Here are some links you may find useful: National Geographic-Kids Culture Crossing PBS Learning CIA World Factbook National Geographic Map-Maker IMPORTANT: We will be working on this project some in class this week. Students choosing to do a PowerPoint and/or type their written summary will need to have a flash-drive or an email account they can use to access their project from the classroom. This week has been focused on reviewing some very important concepts from 4th and 5th grade. Math is sequential and requires mastery at each level. I have discovered this week that many of our students have not mastered their multiplication facts. There are countless phone apps and online games/resources available to help students with their multiplication facts. Please encourage your child to review multiplication facts this week and next, even if they get them correct, they need to PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE. Fluency is key :)
Both classes have homework tonight reviewing the Order of Operations. Students must know they can't always solve math expressions from left to right. Ask them about PEMDAS, they should be able to tell you what operations need to be done first. Below is tonight's homework assignment. Show all work ( re-write problem after each step). Should be completed WITHOUT the use of calculator. 3rd period: Complete all of pg 18 from the red workbook 4th period: Complete pages 18 & 19 from the red workbook. I have included an instructional game below to help students practice following PEMDAS. It includes all operations and some basic exponents. campus.mangahigh.com/en-us/px/6/0/0 Welcome! I am so excited for the 2016-2017 school year to get underway! My name is Mrs. Gibbs, and this is my first day in 6th grade as well! This is my 9th year teaching, and my 5th year as a Barbourville Tiger! Prior to this year, I have been the 7th & 8th grade math teacher. A little about me: my husband and I have 2 sons. They are rowdy, loud, and incredibly smart! You can usually find us on a lake, at a ball field, hiking, or hanging out with our 2 dogs, AJ & Charlie. I received my Bachelor’s degree in Education from Union College. I also received a Master’s degree in School Counseling from the University of the Cumberlands. This blog will be used as a way to communicate and document what is happening in our classroom and within our school. Some posts may be basic assignment reminders, some may provide a link to a worksheet or online site to visit, and some will be simply to show off the hard work our students are putting in! Let's get this year started! |
